Are you looking for a way to fulfill your Sim’s aspiration by reading with an adult in the Sims 4?
Look no further! Here you will find the perfect solution – three easy, game-tested methods and even a cheat code shortcut. Keep reading this post to learn all of them!
Why read with an adult in the Sims 4?
Reading together with an adult in The Sims 4 is a great way to deepen the relationship between parents and their younglings. Also, it will help to build up your Sim’s character.
As such, this has become a must-have milestone for some aspirations.
To fulfil the Successful Lineage or the Big Happy Family aspiration, your Sim must read to a child for two hours. Similarly, kids with the Whiz Kid aspiration need to spend two hours reading with an adult.
If your goal is to devote two hours to reading, you’ll likely need to read several times to make that happen.
How to read with a parent in the Sims 4?
Despite being a simple action, it may not always be clear how to read with an adult in the Sims 4. Allow me to explain the process step-by-step, so you feel confident in completing this milestone.
There are three easy options for reading to your kid. The choice of the option won’t matter for the result – what matters is that you read with your Sim’s children. The milestone will be achieved by the fact of reading with a parent, not by doing it in a specific way.
All these methods are foolproof and won’t take more than a couple of seconds of your time!
1. Use a book from a bookshelf.
If you are a lucky owner of a bookshelf, then you probably can find a book for your child there. Depending on who uses the bookshelf, required actions may look slightly different.
✅ Playing for an adult Sim.
To read to a child, click on the bookshelf and select Open. This will open a window with all of the available books on the shelf.
Select a book for children from the bookcase’s inventory and click on it (the book’s genre is shown in the description of the book). Afterward, choose Read to a child in the interactive menu that appears. This will bring up another window with a list of kids you can read to.

To read to your toddler, click on the bookshelf and select Read to Toddler…. You will see a list of toddlers’ books you own that are perfect for their age group. From there, choose one book and select a little one to share it with!
❌ Playing for a child Sim.
You can’t ask for help reading a book since children can read books themselves.
✅ Playing for a toddler Sim.
Click on a bookshelf and select Book help… from the menu. Next, choose a book you’d like to read and, finally, whom you’d like to ask to read it for you! Let it be someone wise and kind with a gift for telling stories 😉
2. Access a book from the inventory.
If you want to read with a child at home or on the go, having books in your inventory is very handy!
✅ Playing for an adult Sim.
Open your inventory and click on a book you’d like to read. You will see one of these options: Read to Toddler, Read to Child, or Read to Children. Click on it and choose who you’d like to read the book to.
Keep in mind that toddler books can be read to both toddlers and older children, but children’s books are not suitable for toddlers. Now it’s time for everyone to settle down with a great story – happy reading!

❌ Playing for a child.
Children are big enough to read for themselves. That’s why there is no option to ask an adult for help.
✅ Playing for a toddler. Open the inventory and click on a book you’d like to be read to. Choose “Book help…” and select an adult from the pop-up menu.
3. Read a book placed in the world.
Owning even one book gives you the perfect opportunity to read aloud to your child! You don’t need a designated spot for it either – in my Sims family, their children’s room typically has books scattered about on the floor.
✅ Playing for an adult.
Click on the book and choose Read for Toddler… (if it’s a toddler book) or Read for Child… (if it’s a book for children).
❌ Playing for a child.
Children can read themselves, and asking a parent for help is no option.
✅ Playing for a toddler.
Click on a book (it has to be a book for toddlers!) and choose Book Help… Then, select an adult who will read it for you.
That’s it!
As you can see, both toddlers and adults can start the reading process. But children cannot ask adults to read for them; that’s why parents have to initiate reading themselves.
What if that doesn’t work?
Rest assured, I’m here to make sure nothing goes wrong!
Here is a comprehensive list of solutions for any issue you may have while attempting to read with an adult. If what you’re experiencing isn’t addressed here, leave me a comment, and I’ll get back to you!
How to buy a book in the Sims 4?
If you want your Sims to read in The Sims 4, there’s no way around it – they need books!
Fortunately, building a library of literature in the game is easy. All you have to do is to purchase a bookshelf from the Build Mode, and your household will magically own an assortment of titles.
If you’re after something specific or want books within certain genres, don’t worry – just buy them separately. Before long, your Sim family will enjoy reading stories as much as they like living them!
To buy books in the Sims 4, you have two options:
- First, your Sim can click on any available bookshelf and select “Purchase Books”; this will lead to a pop-up where they can buy any book they like!
- The second option is to use a computer and “Order” books online.
Both these options will result in the book appearing in the Sims’ inventory immediately after purchase.
Why can I not purchase a book from a bookshelf?
When you click on your bookshelf, an interactive menu should appear that allows you to purchase books. Unfortunately, rare glitches can prevent the process from running smoothly.
If you’re having difficulty purchasing books from your bookcase, try these tried-and-true solutions:
- Buy a new book.
- Sell and repurchase your bookcase.
- Go to another location and then come back to your home lot.
- If all else fails, log out of your account and log back in for one final attempt.
Why is there no “Read to a child” option?
If you don’t see an option to read for a child while playing as a parent, the book you have chosen isn’t suitable for kids. To ensure that the book is appropriate for toddlers or older children, check the book’s genre in the description.
Also, your kid may be asleep or in school. In this case, wait until he or she is available for reading, and try again!
What if I see only the book’s description when I click on it?
If the interaction menu does not appear when you click on a book, then the book is not appropriate for your Sim.
Carefully examine the book’s genre – it should be either a children’s or toddler’s book. These genres are age-dependent. Therefore, parents cannot read children’s books to toddlers and vice versa.
How to add a book to an adult’s inventory?
Your bookshelves likely already hold a few children’s favorites, such as Lord of the Swings or The First Unicorn.
To add them to your inventory, click on the bookcase and select “Open.” When the bookcase’s inventory appears, select a book and click “Put in Inventory.”
Likewise, if you stumble across a book simply lying around, click on it and select “Put in Inventory.”
Alternatively, you can add books to your inventory by purchasing them. Buy whatever interests you through your computer or a bookshelf (read more on how to buy a book here). All acquired books will be added directly to your Sim’s inventory.
Keep in mind that if you’re planning on reading stories to children – make sure it is appropriate for their age!
Can you only read to toddlers in Sims 4?
You can read to toddlers and to older children in the Sims 4.
How to read to several kids at the same time
Impressively, you can read to multiple youngsters at the same time!
To do that, play as an adult Sim and pick a book appropriate for their age. If you have children of different age groups, it’s best to choose a toddler-friendly volume they’ll all enjoy. Thereafter proceed with one of the methods listed above and get your kids ready for some quality bonding time with stories!
At the point when you spot a pop-up with a list of the kids nearby, feel free to pick multiple children and read to as many of them as you wish. As soon as you start reading, all the chosen youngsters will quickly flock around you!
